Olesija Saue - Personal branding

Do you love what you do? If you are a coach, trainer, advisor, consultant, mentor, service provider, or freelancer, chances are you’ll happily answer, “Yes.” You help people, solve their problems, and make their lives better. You do your work with heart and know it’s your calling.

But now I want to ask something more challenging — what is your relationship with sales?

Does selling and offering your services feel as natural and enjoyable to you as helping your clients? Or are you like 99% of the clients who come to me and admit:

  • “I don’t want to sell myself.”
  • “I don’t know how to sell myself.”
  • “Sales isn’t for me.”

And another critical question: What is your relationship with money? Do you charge fair value for your work, or does stating your price make you want to disappear into the ground?

Why am I asking these questions?

Let me explain. My journey in sales began when I was 23 years old and became a Sales Manager at a steel plant. I knew nothing about sales or steel. But being a young, ambitious person — that didn’t stop me. And I learned quickly. I remember asking my boss how sales worked, and his answer was: “Treat your clients like dating partners — take a genuine interest in them and build long-term relationships.” This advice came, of course, before the Tinder era.

And that’s what I did. I showed interest, built relationships, and sold shiploads of steel worth tens of millions of euros. Later, I sold many other things — from chemicals to shoes. Sales felt natural, even fun.

But then I transitioned to personal branding and coaching, and suddenly, I hit a roadblock. All the sales techniques and strategies I had used successfully before suddenly felt fake. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Sales felt entirely repellent, even wrong. I thought, I can’t sell anymore!

When you are the core of the sale, everything changes!

When you are the equation’s core — your personality, values, knowledge, and experience — subconscious fears and inner beliefs can start working against you:

  • “What if they don’t like me?”
  • “What if I’m not good enough?”
  • “Am I worth this money?”
  • “Help! I don’t want to push myself on people.” …and so on.

These questions and beliefs can unconsciously make you hold back, fear visibility, avoid sales conversations, or feel uncomfortable asking for money for your services. They also reflect deeply rooted beliefs that shape how you perceive yourself and your value.

When someone says “no” to your offer, it can feel like a personal rejection in your subconscious mind. The subconscious tends to confuse rejection of your offer with rejection of your worth as a person. This creates a sense that your value has diminished, even though it’s simply a response to a specific offer, not a judgment of who you are.

Our subconscious perceives any potential “no” as a real threat, and that’s why sales can feel so repulsive — it brings out our deepest fears and insecurities. Since the threat feels “real,” it seems easier not to start at all. But when you learn to separate your value from external feedback, sales become a natural part of your business.

I’ve been working with personal branding and visibility topics since 2018. I’ve written a book and conducted hundreds of training sessions, webinars, and workshops. But I always felt that something essential was missing — like a critical puzzle piece.

Two years ago, I started working more in 1:1 and group mentoring formats. And that missing piece began to reveal itself. Over the past few years, more and more well-known individuals with strong brands but no money have come to me. Their brand is visible, but it doesn’t sell. What’s going on?

It took me several years to understand how to sell naturally and authentically when you are the core of the sale. I learned that a strong and visible personal brand can be the key to making sales a natural part of your business.

Finally, I discovered that there are only three most critical factors that make sales a natural part of your business- YOUR STATE, YOUR NETWORK, AND SYSTEMS AROUND YOUR PERSONAL BRAND. And the only thing that separates authentic sales from aggressive sales is your STATE.

My sincere wish is to help you change your attitude towards sales. To make sales no longer something you fear or avoid but a natural and enjoyable part of who you are and your business.

Because without sales, you have no one to help. Without clients, you don’t have a business — you just have an expensive hobby.
